DENVER – September 13 , 2005 — Changes are afoot in the aviation industry, with 50 percent of the world's airlines outsourcing their ULD (unit load device) management business by 2010, according to a recent survey carried out by Jettainer among 60 international experts covering air freight and ground handling. A full 50 percent of those questioned also revealed that ULD management will increase in importance in the next five years.
However, ULD management is already seen as an important area for airlines today, since 39 percent of respondents (multiple responses possible) currently consider ULD management to be an important service. A further 33 percent believe that airlines would no longer be competitive if they did not offer this service.
According to the experts, the most important advantages of ULD management are "an increase in efficiency“ – 95 percent rated this as "very important" (multiple responses possible) – and "cost savings" ("very important" for 89 percent), although another 58 percent put "saving positioning costs" in the "very important" category, followed by "speed up loading“ (42 percent) and "repatriation of capital" (20 percent).
